Background of the Study
Access to academic resources, particularly libraries, is crucial for the development of research skills among nursing students. Libraries provide essential resources such as books, journals, online databases, and research materials, all of which contribute to students’ academic and professional growth (Ali et al., 2024). At Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, nursing students often face challenges in accessing updated resources, which may hinder their ability to engage in evidence-based research and develop critical thinking skills. Library access, particularly in the digital age, plays a pivotal role in facilitating nursing students' research capabilities and encouraging academic independence. This study aims to assess the effect of library access on the research capabilities of nursing students at the institution.
Statement of the Problem
The quality of research conducted by nursing students is often limited by inadequate access to resources. In many institutions in Nigeria, including Federal Polytechnic Birnin Kebbi, libraries may lack the necessary resources or modern technological tools required to foster high-quality research (Ogunyomi & Mbah, 2024). Nursing students at this institution may struggle to access critical research materials, limiting their ability to conduct evidence-based research. This study seeks to investigate how library access influences nursing students' research capabilities and academic performance.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of library access on the research capabilities of nursing students at Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi.
2. To evaluate the resources available in the library and their role in enhancing nursing students’ research activities.
3. To identify challenges faced by nursing students in accessing library resources and how they affect their research capabilities.
Research Questions
1. How does access to library resources affect the research capabilities of nursing students at Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi?
2. What resources in the library are most beneficial for nursing students' research?
3. What challenges do nursing students face in accessing library resources and how do these challenges affect their research?
Research Hypotheses
1. Library access does not significantly impact nursing students’ research capabilities at Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi.
2. The availability of resources in the library does not significantly enhance nursing students' research activities.
3. Challenges in accessing library resources do not significantly hinder nursing students’ research capabilities.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nursing students at Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, who have access to the institution's library. Limitations include the possibility of discrepancies in students' self-reported experiences and the potential lack of adequate research infrastructure in the library.
Definitions of Terms
